Tamko Shingle Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Tamko shingle repair in San Diego typically costs $450 to $1,800 installed, depending on how many shingles failed and whether the underlayment or flashing underneath needs attention. We stock Tamko-compatible shingles and color-match them to your existing roof, and most repairs take one visit since our trucks carry the common Heritage and Elite series colors. You usually discover the problem one of two ways: you spot a shingle in the yard after a Santa Ana wind event, or you notice a water stain on the ceiling that wasn’t there last month.
The important thing to know up front: a single missing or cracked Tamko shingle is rarely just a shingle problem. Water follows gravity, and by the time you see damage from inside, it has already worked through the shingle, the underlayment, and often a section of decking. That’s why we price the repair as a system, not just a shingle swap. Grant Whitlock has walked enough San Diego roofs to know that what looks like a $200 patch job from the ground is sometimes a $1,200 repair once the damaged layer comes off. We show you what we find with photos and give you the written price before we pull a single nail.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Most of the Tamko shingles we repair in San Diego are from three product lines: Heritage (the laminated architectural series, including Heritage Vintage and Heritage Woodgate), Elite (the heavier architectural line with the wider exposure), and Titan XT (the impact-rated shingle you see more often in east county and fire-prone zones). We also work on Tamko’s 3-tab products, though those are less common on San Diego homes built after the mid-2000s.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches homeowners off guard: Tamko architectural shingles are not interchangeable across all series, even when the color name sounds the same. A Heritage “Weathered Wood” and an Elite “Weathered Wood” are different product specs with different shadow lines, and a patch that doesn’t match will be visible from the street for the life of the roof. We verify the shingle by checking the bundle wrapper or the selvage edge marking on an intact shingle before we order or pull anything from the truck.
OEM Tamko shingles are our default recommendation while your roof is under warranty or within a few years of installation. After warranty, quality aftermarket equivalents from the same weight class can save you money, but we’ll show you both options and let you decide with real numbers in front of you. Mercer Roofing Co San Diego is an independent roofing contractor and not affiliated with Tamko, so our recommendations are based on what actually holds up on coastal and inland San Diego roofs, not a manufacturer sales sheet.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout elbows. Tamko shingles shed granules as the asphalt layer starts to degrade. Some granule loss is normal in the first year, but after year five, heavy granule accumulation in one area usually means the shingle mat is drying out and that section is close to cracking through. More granules downstream from one roof plane than another tells us exactly where to look.
- Shingle edges curling upward or cupping. San Diego’s unshaded south and west roof slopes bake in direct sun, and the temperature cycling between hot afternoons and cool coastal nights causes the asphalt to stiffen and curl. A curled edge catches wind and becomes a tear point during the next strong breeze. We see this most often on Heritage shingles that are 10 to 15 years old in University City and La Mesa.
- Cracks running vertically through the shingle body. These typically start at the nail line or along the center of the shingle. A cracked Tamko shingle is past the point of resealing; water is already getting to the underlayment beneath it. Vertical cracks on multiple shingles in the same roof zone indicate the whole section is near the end of its service life.
- Shingles that lift easily when you gently press the corner. Tamko shingles seal with a thermal asphalt strip that activates once the roof reaches temperature. If a shingle never sealed properly, or if the seal has broken, it will flap in the wind and eventually tear off. You can check this from a ladder without walking the roof: a properly sealed shingle should not lift with light finger pressure.
- Water staining on the underside of the roof deck or along ceiling joists. This is the late-stage signal. By the time it shows up indoors, the shingle layer has failed, the underlayment is compromised, and the decking may need a section replaced before new shingles go on. The good news is that a professional repair can localize this if it’s caught when the stain is still small and contained to one rafter bay.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most San Diego homes, expect the following ranges for Tamko shingle repair:
- Small isolated repair (1 to 3 shingles, no decking damage): $450 to $650. Parts, labor, and the trip are all included. This is the most common repair we quote.
- Larger repair (a section, such as one roof plane edge or a chimney corner): $800 to $1,400. This involves removing more shingles, replacing flashing or underlayment as needed, and blending the patch so it doesn’t stand out.
- Repair including decking replacement (water-damaged plywood or OSB): $1,200 to $1,800. We cut out the rotted section, replace it, add new underlayment, and shingle over it. We always show you the rotted section in photos before we close it up.
Every repair we write for Tamko shingles includes the shingles themselves, fasteners, any required underlayment or flashing, disposal of the old material, and cleanup. We give you the written price before any work begins, and that price is the price; no change orders appear at the end unless you approve them in writing mid-job after we uncover something we discussed. The workmanship is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, and that includes a free second visit if the problem is ours.
DIY or Call Us?
Walking a steep roof to replace a Tamko shingle is not the place to learn roofing, and a fall from even a single-story San Diego roofline can put you in the hospital. We recommend homeowners limit themselves to what they can check from a ladder or the ground: look for missing shingles, granule piles in gutters, and any shingle edges that seem to lift in the wind. Note what you see, take photos if you can, and give us a call at (619) 810-5520.
The most common DIY mistake we see is sealing around a damaged shingle with a tube of roof cement or silicone. That works for a few months, and then the water finds a new path under the shingle above it. Now you have the original leak plus a second one, and the repair we have to do is bigger than the one you started with. If you find damage and want a second set of eyes before committing to a repair, call us. We’ll give you an honest assessment and a written estimate, and if the roof is fine, we’ll tell you that too.
FAQs
Tamko Heritage and Elite architectural shingles typically last 15 to 22 years on San Diego homes, with coastal properties in Coronado and Point Loma often on the shorter end because salt air and persistent marine layer moisture accelerate asphalt breakdown. Homes in inland areas like El Cajon or Poway that get more direct sun and heat cycling can also see accelerated aging, so the real answer is that a 20-year Tamko roof in San Diego is a roof doing its job well. If your Tamko shingles are past year 15 and you’re seeing granule loss or curling, a targeted repair can buy you time while you plan for replacement.
Yes, most isolated Tamko shingle failures are repairable, as long as the damage is limited to a few shingles and the decking beneath is still sound. The repair involves removing the damaged shingles, checking the underlayment, installing color-matched replacements, and resealing the surrounding shingles so the patch blends into the roof. We’ll tell you honestly if the damage is too widespread to patch and a section replacement makes more sense.
Most Tamko shingle repairs on San Diego homes take 2 to 4 hours from setup to cleanup, and we can usually schedule them within a few days of your call. The work is done in one visit since our trucks carry the common Tamko colors, and if a color needs to be special-ordered, we’ll let you know before we schedule the appointment.
We stock the most common Tamko Heritage and Elite colors on our trucks and can source any Tamko series or color within a couple of business days through our local San Diego supplier network. You never need to order parts yourself. We also stock compatible parts for GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed roofs, so if your roof is a mix of brands or you’re not sure what’s up there, we can identify it and handle the match.
If you’ve got a Tamko shingle that’s failing, or you just want someone to take a look before the rainy season arrives, call us at (619) 810-5520. We’ll schedule a visit, send you the name and photo of your technician before they arrive, and put your repair price in writing before any work starts. A roof shouldn’t be something you worry about – that’s what we’re here for.
