IKO Underlayment & Deck Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We stock and install IKO-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials daily across San Diego, with most deck repairs and underlayment replacements running between $85 and $140 per sheet of plywood or OSB replaced, including labor and disposal. Typical full underlayment replacement on an average San Diego ranch home falls between $1,800 and $3,400 installed. When you call us, we’ll bring the right IKO-compatible material on the truck, not make you wait for a second trip.

Most San Diego homeowners discover this problem the way you probably did: a shingle lifted, a granule trail appeared in the gutter, or a soft spot showed itself underfoot during a gutter cleaning. By the time you see those signs, the underlayment or decking beneath the shingles has already been failing for a while. The good news is this is a fixable problem, and it rarely means a full roof replacement. What it does mean is that water has gotten past the first line of defense, and the layer that actually keeps your living room dry is now doing more work than it was built for.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO manufactures shingle lines under the Cambridge, Dynasty, Nordic, and Marathon names, and each one has a slightly different relationship with the underlayment beneath it. The architecture of the shingle changes how water moves across it, but the underlayment underneath doesn’t care much: what matters is that it’s installed as a continuous, lapped, waterproof barrier rated for the slope of your San Diego roof and the specific IKO shingle weight sitting on top of it.

If you have IKO Cambridge or Dynasty architectural shingles, the original install likely used a synthetic underlayment or a #30 felt. If you have Marathon or Nordic, a heavier underlayment or self-adhered ice-and-water shield in the valleys and eaves is more typical for our San Diego microclimates, especially in coastal pockets where morning marine layer sits longer than people expect. One compatibility gotcha we solve paying attention to: some homeowners buy an aftermarket peel-and-stick underlayment to go under their IKO shingle repair, then discover it’s not rated for the high heat we get on inland San Diego roofs in August. That heat can cause cheap underlayment to outgas and bubble under the shingles. When we spec a replacement, we match the underlayment’s heat rating and the decking thickness to the IKO shingle system above it, not just to whatever is cheapest at the supply house.

Mercer Roofing Co San Diego is an independent service provider and not affiliated with IKO. We work with IKO materials because San Diego homes carry them, often alongside other brands our crews regularly match including GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed.

Signs Your IKO Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on the ceiling after rain. This is the roof telling you the underlayment has a breach. The shingle above may look fine from the ground, but water is getting through somewhere and running until it finds a nail hole or a seam edge to drip through.
  • Granules collecting in gutters or downspouts. IKO shingles shed granules as they age, but a sudden increase usually means the shingle is losing its top coat and the underlayment below is getting more UV exposure than it was designed for. In San Diego’s dry sun, this accelerates quickly once the shingle surface starts to go.
  • Soft spongy spots when you walk the roof. If the decking gives under your foot, it’s already water-damaged. This isn’t a caulk-it-and-forget situation. The plywood or OSB has lost its structural strength and needs to be cut out and replaced before new underlayment goes down.
  • Curling or lifting shingle edges near valleys and eaves. This is often the first visible sign that underlayment below is failing. When underlayment wrinkles or peels, it pushes shingles up from underneath. In San Diego’s expansion-and-contraction cycle between cool nights and hot afternoons, that movement gets worse every season.
  • Musty smell in the attic after a light rain. Underlayment can reach the end of its service life without any leak showing inside the house. The first clue is often just humidity: the underlayment can’t block vapor transfer anymore, so attic air gets heavy and smells like wet wood after even a light drizzle.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Diego, we install IKO-compatible underlayment and deck repair for most homes between $1,800 and $3,400 for a full underlayment replacement on an average 20-to-26 square roof. Smaller repairs, like one sheet of decking replaced and a 10-foot underlayment patch, land between $400 and $750. The range depends on how much decking is rotted, what type of underlayment you already have, and whether any rafters need sistering or replacement.

Every job from Mercer Roofing Co San Diego includes a written price before work starts, a written 365-Day Done Right Promise, and the heavy-cost items like plywood, underlayment, fasteners, and disposal listed line by line. No change orders once the price is set, and if anything isn’t right within a year, we make it right, with a free second visit if the repair fails. Grant Whitlock signs off on the quote himself before it reaches you.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things you can check safely from the ground or from a ladder: look for lifted shingle edges, check the gutters for granule buildup, and keep an eye on interior ceilings after rain. But working on your roof decking or underlayment is not a weekend project. Rotted decking means you’re removing shingles, cutting structural material, and exposing the interior of your roof system, and one wrong step on a compromised deck can put you through the ceiling. Save the attic inspection for a flashlight and your own two feet on the joists only, and leave the cutting and fastening to a crew that carries insurance and does this every week.

If you’re seeing any of the signs above, call us at (619) 810-5520 and we’ll talk you through what you’re seeing. A roof shouldn’t be something you worry about, and that’s what we’re here for.
