IKO Ridge Vent Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We install IKO-compatible ridge vents throughout San Diego, and the installed price typically runs $380 to $640 for a standard single-family home with a 30 to 45-foot ridge line. That includes removing the old vent, prepping the ridge, installing the new IKO vent, and hauling away the old material. Most owners discover their ridge vent has failed when they climb into the attic on a warm afternoon and feel heat that has no business being up there. A failed ridge vent lets San Diego heat build up, which pushes your cooling bill up and bakes your shingles from the underside. The good news: this is a same-afternoon fix when we have the vent on the truck, which we usually do.

Before you call, here are the key takeaways:

  • Installed cost in San Diego usually lands between $380 and $640, depending on ridge length and roof pitch.
  • We carry IKO-compatible ridge vent stock on our trucks across San Diego, so most jobs don’t need a second trip.
  • Every install gets a written price before we start and a 365-day written guarantee on the work.
  • The technician who arrives will send you their name and photo first, and badge in with a photo ID at your door.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO makes a few ridge vent profiles, and they don’t all match up the way you’d think. The two you’ll most likely have on a San Diego roof are the IKO Armourvent Multi and the IKO Armourvent Standard. The Multi is the more common one we see on homes built after 2010. It’s a rolled vent with a flexible baffle design that sits over the ridge opening and gets covered by IKO cap shingles. The Standard is a rigid vent, and it doesn’t play well with every ridge profile, especially steeper pitches.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into all the time: if your home has an IKO Cambridge or IKO Dynasty shingle, the vent is almost certainly an Armourvent Multi with IKO cap shingles cut to match. But if the original roofer used a generic cap shingle instead of IKO’s cap, the vent channel can sit too high or too low, and that’s a big reason homeowners see leaks at the ridge after a few years. The way to check is to look at the cap shingle maker, not just the field shingle. If the caps say IKO, you’re dealing with a true IKO system. If they don’t, we’ll still match the vent correctly, but we need to see it in person to get the profile right. We’re an independent San Diego roofing contractor, not an IKO-owned shop, so our incentive is getting your roof right, not moving a specific brand.

For older IKO roofs, we sometimes deal with the Armourvent R, which is a rigid aluminum vent IKO sold years ago. Those hold up structurally, but the nail holes corrode in salt air, which is a very San Diego problem, especially west of I-5 in Ocean Beach, Point Loma, and La Jolla.

Signs Your IKO Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Attic is noticeably hotter than last summer. The vent’s baffle material can degrade or collapse after 12 to 15 years of San Diego sun, which chokes the airflow. The attic bakes, and your AC picks up the fight. This is the most common first sign.
  • Water staining near the ridge in the attic. This usually means the vent was nailed too close to the ridge opening or the cap shingles have lifted. It isn’t always a roof leak. Often it’s condensation from a vent that can’t breathe.
  • Cap shingles along the ridge look cracked or are lifting at the edges. The cap layer takes more weather than any other part of the roof, and once it breaks free, the vent underneath is exposed to sun and debris. In Clairemont Mesa, our crews have replaced more than a few ridges where the vent was fine but the caps had curled like old paperback covers.
  • Small birds or wasps entering under the ridge. A failed vent edge creates a gap just wide enough for starlings in San Diego to turn your attic into a nest box. Once they’re in, the vent needs to come off, the space cleaned, and a new vent installed over a properly sealed ridge opening.
  • Granules from cap shingles collecting in the gutter below the ridge. This is the early warning that the cap shingle adhesive is failing. The vent is still under there, often salvageable, but if you wait, the vent will be damaged too, and the repair cost goes up.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical San Diego single-family home, the installed cost for a new IKO-compatible ridge vent runs $380 to $640. That covers the vent, any underlayment or fasteners, installation labor, and haul-off of the old material. Longer ridges push the price toward the top of that range or a bit beyond. A very steep roof, a two-story walk, or ridge access that requires extra safety setup adds labor.

If the cap shingles are shot too, which they usually are by the time the vent itself has failed, add $180 to $320 for new cap shingles cut and installed over the vent. We’ll always show you the condition of the caps before we touch anything. You’ll get a written line-item price before any work starts, and that price will not move on you. Every ridge vent install from Mercer Roofing comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if what we install isn’t right within the year, we come back and make it right. In writing. Every time.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. There are things you can safely check from inside your attic with a flashlight: look for daylight coming through the ridge in places where it shouldn’t be, check for water staining on the underside of the decking, and feel whether the attic is hotter than it should be for the season. That kind of inspection is smart, and it costs you nothing.

Walking a ridge line to swap a vent is a different matter. You’re at the highest point of the house, on a slope, usually without proper tie-off points, and ridge work means moving along the spine while the roof falls away on both sides. People make mistakes up there. We carry the right safety equipment, and our technicians do this work year-round. If you’re anywhere near the coast in San Diego, you’re also dealing with morning marine layer moisture, which makes shingles slick well into the day. If you’ve found your vent failing and you’d rather not be the one up there, call (619) 810-5520 and we’ll come look. The estimate is free, and you’ll know exactly who’s coming to your door before they arrive.
