GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
GAF ridge vent installation in San Diego typically runs $850 to $1,600 installed, depending on roof length, existing decking condition, and whether we’re replacing a failed vent or cutting new ridge openings. We stock GAF Snow Country and Cobra ridge vent on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit. The usual way homeowners discover theirs has failed is the classic San Diego summer sequence: attic gets hotter than it should, AC bill climbs, and then comes the first sign of moisture or mold near the ridge line.
Ridge vents fail quietly. You won’t hear it. You’ll feel it in the upstairs hallway that stays stuffy at 7pm, or see it in paint that starts peeling near the ceiling. A ridge vent is the roof’s exhaust system. When it stops moving air, your attic turns into a slow oven, and over time that heat and trapped moisture works its way into the framing. By the time most homeowners call us, the vent has been compromised for at least one summer season.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF makes two main ridge vent lines we install regularly: the Cobra Ridge Vent series and the Snow Country series. Cobra is the workhorse. It’s a rolled, shingle-over vent that comes in 20-foot lengths and works with most asphalt shingle roofs in San Diego, including GAF Timberline, Royal Sovereign, and Grand Sequoia lines. Snow Country is the rigid-profile version, built for steeper pitches and areas where debris or ember intrusion matters more, which matters here in San Diego’s wildland-urban interface zones like Scripps Ranch, Rancho Peñasquitos, and parts of El Cajon.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see all the time: a Cobra vent is not interchangeable with Snow Country on the same roof profile. The shingle overlap detail changes, and if the original installer cut the ridge slot wider than 2 inches, Snow Country won’t seat properly without decking repair first. Also, if your home was built before 1995 in San Diego, the original ridge vent may be a discontinued GAF product no longer manufactured. In that case, we match the current equivalent and reflash the ridge line so it looks like it came that way.
OEM versus aftermarket is a real decision with GAF. We install GAF-branded ridge vents whenever the roof’s shingle warranty is still active, because GAF’s wind warranty on Timberline shingles is tied to using their accessory products. If your shingles are older and out of warranty, a quality aftermarket roll vent can save $150 to $300 and performs nearly identically in San Diego’s climate. We’ll show you both options before we start, written out, so you choose with your eyes open.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Attic temperature spikes in summer. San Diego afternoons push attic temps past 140°F when ridge ventilation stops. If your upstairs runs 8 to 10 degrees hotter than downstairs starting around 3pm, the vent is likely not exhausting. We’ve measured attics in Clairemont Mesa where a blocked ridge vent was the single biggest heat source.
- Moisture staining or mildew near the peak inside. When warm air can’t escape, condensation collects along the underside of the roof deck near the ridge. You’ll see it as faint brown staining on the plywood or drips on insulation.
- Shingle curling or cracking specifically at the ridge line. Trapped heat cooks shingles from underneath. Ridge cap shingles fail first, cracking across the top where they bend over the vent profile.
- Visible gaps, tears, or separation in the vent material from the ground. GAF vent material is a synthetic fabric mesh. Once UV exposure or a San Diego Santa Ana windstorm compromises the outer shingle cover, the fabric starts to shred and pull away from the roof deck.
- You hear wind whistling through the vent during storms. A properly seated GAF ridge vent is quiet. Whistling means the vent cap has lifted or the baffle has clogged with dust and debris from our dry, windy seasons, which is common in East County.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical single-story San Diego home with 40 to 60 linear feet of ridge, expect $950 to $1,450 installed. Two-story homes or complex roof lines with multiple ridge segments run $1,200 to $1,600. The price includes removal of the failed vent, inspection and repair of the ridge slot if needed, installation of the new GAF vent, new ridge cap shingles to match, and full cleanup with magnetic nail sweep.
| Scope | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Replace vent only, simple single ridge, up to 40 ft | $850 – $1,050 |
| Replace vent, 40-60 ft, includes new ridge cap shingles | $950 – $1,350 |
| Multi-ridge or two-story home, 60+ ft total | $1,200 – $1,600 |
| Add ridge vent where none existed (cut new slot) | $1,500 – $2,100 |
Every one of those prices is written down before we start. No change orders, no “we found more damage” surprises unless we show you photos first and you approve the additional scope in writing. Grant Whitlock walks every ridge vent job himself before the crew starts, and again before we call it done. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t right within a year, we come back and make it right. That’s in writing, included with the estimate.

Ridge vent replacement is not a safe DIY project, and I’ll tell you why plainly. The work happens at the highest point of your roof, on a sloped surface, often in direct San Diego sun. One wrong step on a ridge line, and you’re looking at a fall measured in stories, not feet. Add to that the need to cut roofing material cleanly, seat vent fabric without gaps that let in embers or rain, and install ridge cap shingles so they don’t lift in a Santa Ana, and the risk-to-reward math is bad.
What you can safely do: look at the vent from the ground with binoculars, check your attic for moisture staining, and note when the upstairs heat builds. That information helps us pin the diagnosis before we even climb the ladder. If you want someone up there who’s background-checked, badged, and whose name and photo you’ll have before they arrive, keep our number handy. If a repair is possible, we’ll tell you, and the written estimate covers exactly what we’ll do.
FAQs
A properly installed GAF ridge vent lasts 15 to 25 years in San Diego’s climate. Our dry, sunny weather is actually kinder to vent material than humid coastal climates, but UV exposure on the shingle cap is what eventually degrades the system. The vent fabric itself rarely fails first. It’s usually the ridge cap shingles that crack, then the vent fabric gets exposed and starts tearing. If you’re at the 18-year mark and seeing shingle granule loss at the ridge, plan for replacement. Call (619) 810-5520 and we’ll inspect it for free.
Sometimes, yes. If the damage is localized to a short section of torn fabric or a few loose ridge cap shingles, a spot repair runs $250 to $500. If the vent has pulled loose along most of the ridge or the fabric is brittle and shredding, replacement is the honest fix. We’ll always price both options when both are viable, and what you see in writing is what you pay.
Most GAF ridge vent replacements take 3 to 5 hours for a single ridge. We arrive in the morning, protect your landscaping, set up roof access, and are gone by early afternoon. The driveway looks like we were never there.
We stock both GAF Cobra and Snow Country ridge vents on our trucks, along with matching ridge cap shingles in the most common San Diego colors. If your roof color is less common, we may need 1 to 2 days to pull the exact match from our supplier. You’ll know before we schedule.
