GAF Roofing in San Diego, CA | Mercer Roofing Co San Diego
We provide independent GAF roofing service across San Diego, from single shingle replacements to full tear-offs. The thing that makes our GAF work here different is simple: we know how GAF materials age in this specific climate, where coastal fog and inland sun break roofs down in very different ways. If you need an experienced GAF crew in San Diego, call (619) 810-5520 for a free estimate. Our GAF sales & service covers everything from Timberline re-covers to Liberty low-slope systems.
Why San Diego Residents Choose Us for GAF Service
We’ve torn off and replaced GAF roofs across San Diego for over two decades. That includes Timberline shingle re-covers in Clairemont, and low-slope Liberty systems in Point Loma, where coastal salt air eats at flashing faster than people expect. Grant Whitlock, our owner, walks every job himself before a single nail goes in. He grew up in Los Angeles and completed the building construction program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and he’s spent the better part of two decades serving San Diego. Our San Diego service area coverage means we can usually have a technician out within a few days, and we stock common GAF shingle colors and accessories locally so repairs don’t stall waiting on parts.

Common GAF Roofing Problems We Solve in San Diego
- Granule loss on Timberline shingles in inland valleys. In El Cajon and other East County neighborhoods, intense UV breaks down the asphalt layer faster than coastal areas. We regularly see bald spots on Timberline shingles at the 12 to 15 year mark, well before the warranty expires. The granules end up in gutters and the shingle underneath turns brittle.
- Edge cracking from thermal cycling during Santa Ana winds. South-facing slopes in San Diego heat up hard during the day and cool fast at night. That repeated expansion and contraction cracks shingle edges, especially on older Timberline HDZ roofs. Once edges crack, water finds its way under the shingle.
- Algae streaking on north-facing slopes in coastal fog zones. Point Loma and Ocean Beach get long stretches of damp morning fog. Moisture lingers on north-facing Timberline slopes and algae takes hold. It’s cosmetic at first, but the trapped moisture accelerates granule loss over time.
- Low-slope Liberty SBS membrane blistering. In 1960s flat roof additions around Clairemont and Allied Gardens, ventilation was often marginal from day one. Trapped moisture under Liberty SBS membranes causes blisters that eventually split. Repairs work, but the underlying ventilation issue needs fixing or the problem returns.
- Wood shake roofs buried under multiple layers of GAF composition shingles. This one is everywhere in Clairemont and Allied Gardens. Original 1960s cedar shakes get covered with one, sometimes two layers of GAF shingles. The decking underneath traps moisture, the weight adds up, and the roof never breathes. Tear-off on these is a bigger job than a straight re-cover in a newer subdivision.
GAF Service in San Diego: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
San Diego’s Clairemont and Allied Gardens have hundreds of original 1960s wood shake roofs now buried under multiple layers of composition shingles, often GAF. That condition is far more common here than in newer East County subdivisions or coastal towns like La Jolla. When a GAF roof sits on top of the original shakes, you get a hidden problem: the shakes trap moisture against the decking, and the decking rots from the inside out. Layering more GAF on top doesn’t fix it. It makes the weight problem worse and the ventilation problem worse. If you’re in Clairemont or Allied Gardens and your roof has more than one layer on it, the honest answer is usually a full tear-off down to the decking, then a single layer of GAF Timberline or Timberline Ultra HDZ with proper ridge and eave vents. That’s the only way the decking dries out and the shingles last as long as GAF says they should. Last spring, our tech pulled two layers of old GAF Timberline off a 1964 Ranch in Clairemont, only to find the original cedar shakes underneath had trapped moisture against the decking. We replaced the rotted decking, added ridge and eave vents, and installed a single layer of Timberline HDZ with new vent boots. The homeowner said the upstairs bedroom finally stopped smelling musty.
GAF Models & Products We Service in San Diego
Our crews work on Timberline HDZ, Timberline Ultra HDZ, Glenwood, and Liberty SBS systems every week. For mid-life roofs, we use OEM GAF shingles and accessories to keep warranty coverage intact. For hard-to-match discontinued colors, we source quality aftermarket underlayment and flashing that meets code without pretending it’s GAF. We keep common Timberline HDZ colors in stock locally so our Roof Repair in San Diego moves faster, and we can usually order less common colors for delivery within a few days.

AfterGAF Service Pricing in San Diego
GAF shingle replacement in San Diego typically runs $350 to $650 for a small repair like replacing a few cracked or granule-bald shingles plus vent boots. Roof decking replacement is a bigger job: expect $1,200 to $3,500 depending on how much decking is rotted and whether the roof is single-story or has a steep pitch. A full Timberline HDZ tear-off on a typical 1,800-square-foot San Diego ranch usually falls between $12,000 and $22,000, and that includes new underlayment, flashing, vent boots, and haul-away. Low-slope Liberty SBS replacement runs higher per square foot because the membrane work is more labor-intensive. Every estimate we give is written and line-itemed before work starts, so you’ll know exactly what you’re paying and why. Call (619) 810-5520 to schedule a free estimate, and we’ll walk the roof with you and explain what’s actually going on up there.

FAQs – GAF Roofing in San Diego
Yes, in most cases. We stock the most common Timberline HDZ colors and can order the rest from our GAF supplier. Weathering is the wildcard: shingles that have been on a roof for 8 to 10 years have faded from UV exposure, so a fresh bundle of the same color will be slightly darker at first. It blends within a season or two. We’ll show you samples before we install anything. Call (619) 810-5520 and we’ll bring samples to the estimate.
No, and that’s deliberate. Timberline Ultra HDZ is rated for slopes of 2:12 or steeper. Low-slope roofs in Point Loma, especially those 1960s flat roof additions, need a membrane system like GAF Liberty SBS. Installing shingles on a low-slope roof is how you get leaks, and we won’t do it. We’ll tell you what your roof actually needs and price it honestly.
El Cajon sits inland where summer UV is brutal, and GAF Timberline shingles there lose granules much faster than the same shingles in coastal San Diego neighborhoods. The sun bakes the asphalt, the granules let go, and by year 12 or 13 you see bald patches. It’s not a manufacturing defect. It’s the climate. If the roof is otherwise sound, we can replace the damaged shingles. If granule loss is widespread, it’s time to talk about a full re-cover with a UV-rated GAF shingle. Call (619) 810-5520 and we’ll tell you which way to go.
It depends on the membrane’s condition. Small blisters or a single split can usually be patched with GAF Liberty materials and you’ll get a few more years out of it. But if the membrane is cracked in multiple places or the decking underneath is soft, repair money is wasted. We’ll probe it during the estimate and give you a straight answer, with a written price for either path.
Yes. Every GAF roof replacement we install includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the work isn’t right within a year, we make it right at no charge. Every repair also includes a written guarantee, and if a repair fails, the second visit is free. We put it in writing before we start, not after.
