Why San Diego Homeowners Choose CertainTeed Roofing
We’re an independent Certainteed in San Diego roofing service provider, and we repair and install the brand’s full residential lineup, from Landmark architectural shingles to Presidential Shake and Flintlastic SA low-slope systems. What sets our CertainTeed work apart is local failure data: after years of climbing onto roofs from Point Loma to El Cajon, we know exactly how CertainTeed materials behave in San Diego’s salt air, Santa Ana winds, and inland UV. We’re not affiliated with or authorized by CertainTeed, and we say that plainly because it matters. It means we make repair-vs-replace calls based on what’s on your roof, not on a manufacturer’s sales quota. Call (619) 810-5520 for a free estimate, with a written price before any work starts.
Why Trust Mercer Roofing Co San Diego for Your CertainTeed Roofing?
Our crew has repaired and replaced hundreds of CertainTeed roofs across San Diego’s coastal and inland microclimates, including Certainteed service in National City. That repetition teaches you things a spec sheet never will. We know that CertainTeed Landmark shingles on a south-facing Clairemont slope lose granules differently than the same shingle on a shaded Mission Hills north slope. We know that Presidential Shake’s dimensional profile catches Santa Ana gusts in ways three-tab shingles never do. And we know the right sealant, the right nail pattern, and the right underlayment for each situation because we’ve seen what fails when those details get skipped.
Grant Whitlock, the owner of Mercer Roofing Co San Diego, walks every CertainTeed job himself before a single nail goes in. He grew up in Los Angeles, picked up his first roofing tools on a summer job, and then completed the building construction program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. He’s spent the better part of two decades serving San Diego, including more than a few storm-damaged roofs in Clairemont Mesa. Under his direction, every technician who arrives at your door is background-checked, identity-verified, and carries a photo ID badge as part of the Threshold Verified standard. We send the technician’s name and photo ahead of the visit, so you know who’s coming before they knock. Every repair carries a written guarantee, and if that repair fails within 365 days, we return and make it right, free of charge. The 365-Day Done Right Promise is on paper, not implied.

Common CertainTeed Roofing Problems We Fix in San Diego
San Diego’s climate creates a very specific set of failure patterns on CertainTeed products. Here’s what we see most often, and why it happens here rather than, say, Seattle or Minneapolis:
- Premature granule loss on Landmark shingles on south-facing slopes. The combination of intense UV and salt air breaks down the asphalt layer faster than the manufacturer’s testing anticipates. In Point Loma and Ocean Beach, we regularly find Landmark shingles where granule loss has exposed the fiberglass mat within 12 to 15 years on south elevations, while north elevations still show texture. This isn’t always a defect. It’s environmental stress, and it means replacement timing in coastal San Diego often runs shorter than the warranty prorating schedule.
- Blow-offs of shingles with StreakGuard coating, especially at the eaves and rakes. CertainTeed’s StreakGuard copper-infused granules inhibit algae, which matters on damp north-facing slopes in coastal fog zones. But the original fastening matters more. When staples were used instead of nails, which was common on 1990s and early 2000s installs, the staples corrode in humid coastal air and the shingle releases. We see this on certain neighborhoods in La Jolla and Del Mar where fog sits until noon. The fix is proper re-nailing with ring-shank nails, not adhesive alone.
- Cracking at the nail line on Presidential Shake. The dimensional, heavily laminated profile of Presidential Shake gives it beauty and weight, but it also makes each shingle less flexible. After repeated thermal cycling, micro-cracks can form at the nail line. Then a Santa Ana wind event with gusts over 60 mph starts lifting shingles at those weak points. We address this with specific nail placement and, when appropriate, a higher wind-rating fastening pattern.
- Wrinkling and edge lifting on Flintlastic SA on low-slope roofs. Flintlastic SA is a self-adhered modified bitumen membrane we see on many mid-century flat and low-slope roofs in San Diego, especially around Clairemont and Allied Gardens. The membrane is good. The installation, often, is not. When the decking below has even minor undulation, the self-adhered sheet can’t conform fully, and you get wrinkles that become split points within a few years. We address this by inspecting and correcting the deck surface before re-membrane installation.
- Covered-over wood shake. Rotting decking underneath multiple shingle layers. In Clairemont and Allied Gardens especially, we find homes where the original 1960s wood shake roof was never torn off. Instead, a contractor nailed composition shingles over the shake, sometimes twice. The ventilation is choked, heat builds, and the decking rots from trapped moisture. By the time we’re called, a simple shingle replacement has become a full tear-off with structural decking repair. If your home still carries shake under its CertainTeed shingles, you’re on borrowed time structurally, not cosmetically.
CertainTeed Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
CertainTeed has discontinued some colors and profiles, which creates a specific headache for San Diego homeowners with older roofs. When a hail storm or falling branch takes out ten shingles on a 2008 Landmark roof, matching the color exactly can be nearly impossible. We handle this honestly. We stock common CertainTeed ridge caps, starter strips, and field shingle bundles locally in our San Diego yard, which means faster turnaround on typical repairs. When a color is discontinued, we use close-match aftermarket shingles and tell you, in writing, that the color won’t be exact. Some homeowners in this situation choose to replace the entire slope or the entire roof rather than live with a visible patch. That’s a fair choice, and we’ll price both options so you can decide on numbers, not guesswork.
Our repair-vs-replace rule is straightforward. If decking rot or shingle delamination affects more than 30% of the roof, we recommend replacement. Below that, we recommend our Roof Repair services. We’ll never push a $18,000 replacement for a $900 repair just to fill our schedule. Call (619) 810-5520 and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Our CertainTeed Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. We walk the roof ourselves, checking for granule loss, nail-line cracks, loose shingles, soft decking at the eaves, and improper flashing. For coastal San Diego homes, we also check for corrosion on flashings and fasteners, which the salt air accelerates. You get a written report explaining what’s there and what it means.
- 2
Repair or install. For shingle replacement, we match the CertainTeed profile and color as closely as possible, using OEM or documented close-match aftermarket components. We remove the failed shingle and inspect the course below for hidden damage, which is where most roofers stop early. For a full replacement, we inspect the decking before we install anything, and we only lay new CertainTeed shingles over sound substrate.
- 3
Test. We water-test around flashings and repaired areas when appropriate, and we check the sealant strips at the eaves where blow-offs usually begin. On San Diego’s south-facing slopes, we’re watching for adhesion failures that don’t show up until the first heat wave.
- 4
Warranty. Your written guarantee comes with every repair. If it fails within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

We Also Service These Brands
Mercer Roofing Co San Diego is a multi-brand roofing company. Alongside CertainTeed, we regularly install and repair GAF and Owens Corning products, and we’re equally comfortable working with those systems. That matters for two reasons. First, it means we recommend CertainTeed only when it’s actually the right product for your roof, not because we have a single-brand arrangement. Second, it means we understand how different systems compare, so our repair advice is grounded in real cross-brand experience.
FAQs – CertainTeed Roofing Service in San Diego
Sun failure shows up directionally. South and west slopes lose granules first and fastest, while north slopes in the same roof often show far less wear. That’s environmental, not a defect. A manufacturing problem is usually uniform, appearing across all slopes regardless of sun exposure. We’ll document what we see with photos and tell you which situation you’re in. Call (619) 810-5520 for a roof inspection if you’re unsure.
Presidential Shake is heavy and generally handles wind well, but the nail line is the weak point during Santa Ana gusts, especially if the original install nailed high or used staples. We see nail-line cracks that become tear points when winds push 60 mph. Proper nailing with ring-shank nails in the proper position addresses it. If your Presidential Shake roof has been through several Santa Ana seasons, a fastener inspection is worth the hour it takes.
Sometimes. We maintain a running stock of common CertainTeed colors in our San Diego yard, and we can also source close-match aftermarket shingles for discontinued colors. The match won’t be perfect, and we’ll say so before you spend a dollar. The honest answer is that on a prominent street-facing slope, a visible mismatch can bother you more than the repair cost itself. We’ll show you samples alongside your existing shingles so you can make that call before work starts.
Almost always, uneven decking. Flintlastic SA is a self-adhered membrane, which means it conforms to whatever surface it’s applied to. If the decking has undulation from old framing or previous layers, the membrane wrinkles as it settles. Wrinkles become stress points, then cracks, then leaks. The fix isn’t a patch over the wrinkle. It’s correcting the deck surface and re-membrane installation. In coastal neighborhoods like Pacific Beach and La Jolla Shores, we see this on mid-century homes with original 1950s decking.
If granule loss is isolated to one slope, repair is reasonable. If it’s widespread across multiple slopes and the shingles are delaminating, you’re past repair economics. On a 15-year-old Landmark roof in a high-UV San Diego neighborhood, putting $2,500 into patch repairs buys you maybe two more years. A replacement costs more up front but resets the clock. We’ll show you the numbers for both paths and let you decide. Estimates are free.
CertainTeed roof replacement in San Diego typically runs between $12,000 and $28,000 for an average single-family home, depending on square footage, roof pitch, tear-off layers, decking condition, and the specific product line. Targeted repairs on a CertainTeed roof, like shingle replacement or flashing correction, usually fall between $400 and $1,800. A ridge cap replacement might be $600 to $1,400. Call (619) 810-5520 for an exact quote on your roof. We provide a written price before any work starts, and it never changes once we begin.
